Discover the Benefits of Giving Wisely

Did you know there are creative ways to support Mass Audubon? Ways in which Mass Audubon, you and your loved ones all benefit at the same time?

Such giving techniques are called "planned gifts,” because with thoughtful planning, you create win-win solutions for you and Mass Audubon.

One example of an extraordinary gift that has made a tremendous difference in Mass Audubon’s work is due to the foresight and generosity of a remarkable woman, Louise Ayer Gordon Hathaway. Beginning in 1905, Louise and her family began purchasing land in Lincoln, eventually assembling an estate of 175 acres which included a working farm which they called Drumlin Farm. Louise had a lifetime interest in birds and in Mass Audubon’s education efforts. She also believed deeply in the interdependence of people and nature. Decades before the “local food movement,” Louise was concerned that urbanization and the industrialization of agriculture would cause people to lose their connection to the sources of food. She was also interested in educating the public, and especially children, about the wonders of the natural world and so Louise often invited local children to the farm to experience first-hand how crops were grown and about caring for livestock.

Upon her passing in 1955, Louise left her estate to Mass Audubon. Today her most meaningful gift makes it possible for Mass Audubon to own and operate Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary in Lincoln and to serve as headquarters for some of its staff. Almost 70 years later, Drumlin Farm continues to welcome thousands of children and families each year, allowing them to explore the property and learn about nature and farming in a way that we think would have given Louise great pleasure.
