Why Mass Audubon?

Why Mass Audubon?

Why Consider Mass Audubon in Your Estate Planning?

Mass Audubon has been a trusted name in conservation, education, and access to nature since 1896. We are the largest nature-based conservation organization in Massachusetts, and have a proven track record of working for people, animals, and the Commonwealth. By making Mass Audubon part of your estate plan, you will know that you're joining and supporting a storied legacy of protecting wildlife, conserving and restoring resilient land, advocating for impactful environmental policies, nationally recognized education programs for adults and children, and endless opportunities to experience the outdoors at our wildlife sanctuaries.

Our Mission:

To protect the nature of Massachusetts for people and for wildlife.

Our Vision:

A Massachusetts in which nature—whether found in a city park or deep inside the forests of western Massachusetts or within an urban greenway, or along the 1,500 miles of Massachusetts coastline—is valued as essential to quality of life in the Commonwealth, and people live with appreciation and respect for the complex ecological systems that sustain life on Earth, working together to ensure that they are protected.

And More:

We are guided by Love of Nature, Passion & Commitment, People & Community, Inspiring Action, Credibility, and Teamwork. To learn more, read about why these are our values here.

Our Action Agenda:

Our Action Agenda sets an ambitious five-year plan that signals a dynamic new era for the organization. This groundbreaking effort represents months of spirited collaboration among Mass Audubon staff, Board of Directors, Council, and partners; we thank everyone who contributed their thoughts, perspectives, and ingenuity to this landmark strategy. We're equally grateful to our nature heroes—the members, donors, volunteers, and partners who help bring our mission to life each day; your wisdom and dedication motivated us to aim high and dream big.

Our high-level goals for the Action Agenda capitalize on what we do best—promoting profound engagement between people and wildlife—while taking our work into a new dimension of visibility, impact, and consequence. Both audacious and timely, it reflects the gravity of the challenges confronting the environment and society; with the collective engagement of our entire organization and our valued partners, it is also eminently achievable.

Our Track Record

  • Mass Audubon protects more than 40,000 acres of land, serves over 10,000 campers a year, runs nearly 2,000 public programs a year, and our sanctuary network includes more than 100 properties, including hundreds of miles of trails. We've worked to protect the land and nature for humans and wildlife for 127 years, and are 4-star rated 501(c)(3) charity.
  • In 2022, we were able to protect more than 1,200 acres of land, and have achieved 30 percent of our goal to restore and manage 2,500 acres of coastal habitat. This work has created crucial breeding grounds for threatened Piping Plovers and Least Terns, and added important natural lands that protect our communities from severe storms and rising tides.
  • We value transparency, and offer yearly financial reports that outline our fiscal statements, tax returns, and how we use the charitable contributions we've received each year.
  • You can read our annual report here, and learn about all the goals we've met and positive change we've achieved in the last twelve months.
